Any method of palletizing firewood with side supports allows mechanical handling and reduces the need for workers with leg, arm, or back impairments to lift and carry firewood by hand. Eric Petrovich's Homemade Pallet-Base Firewood Tote has proven to be a low-cost, effective way to handle, haul, and store the split wood that he sells to individuals and wholesale markets. The tote consists of a used IBC (intermediate bulk container) that he fastens atop a wooden pallet. He buys IBCs for $20-$30 each, salvages the cages, and resells the poly-container. When the cage is full of firewood, Petrovich lifts and transports it to a storage area via his 4WD loader tractor forks and covers the top with plastic to keep off the rain or snow, while the wood beneath gets plenty of airflow and sunlight to dry. In other homemade designs, simple wooden frames (sometimes using additional pallets for sides) are constructed atop a pallet to accomplish essentially the same purpose.
