Cliff Brandenburger of Beecher City, IL, has built a Self-Propelled Wheelbarrow out of an old garden tractor. After stripping down the tractor to its frame and rear axle, Brendenburger (1) turned the frame and axle around so that the front became the rear; (2) mounted a 1-foot-diameter caster wheel in place of the front axle; (3) equipped the rig with a horizontal-shaft gasoline engine; (4) connected a gearreduction box to the transmission to change the direction of the shaft and give the engine more torque; (5) mounted a steering handle in place of the steering wheel and fitted it with a throttle, handbrake, and clutch; and (6) hinged the dump-style hopper (which came off a commercial pull-type cart) so that it dumps to the front. The wheelbarrow has three forward gears and one reverse, moves at a "brisk walking" speed, and has plenty of power.
