Bob Medd's Portable Platform Lift
Bob Medd's Portable Platform Lift is primarily used to service the Hollandale, MN, farmer's equipment but could be used to access machinery operator's stations as well. The lift consists of a square base frame supporting a telescoping tube that raises an expanded steel platform. The telescoping tube and attached platform can be tilted to allow easy storage in a building. The base frame has three wheels in a triangle arrangement. The front two are independent of each other, while the rear-mounted third wheel (equipped with a large, horizontal sprocket) is steerable. The sprocket is connected by roller chain to a smaller sprocket on a steering wheel shaft mounted to the corner of the base frame. Rotating the steering wheel moves the chain, which then turns the rear wheel to guide the lift. A push bar welded on the rear left side of the frame is used to move from one location to another. (Note: An alternative would be equipping it with 12-volt electric motors to drive the frame's front wheels.) Attached vertically to the base frame between the two front wheels is the two-piece, telescoping mast. The mast's inner length is fastened to the base, while its outer length is elevated by a 72-inch-stroke hydraulic cylinder located inside the mast tubes. To add stability, two caster-action wheels are mounted on the corners of the base frame and two outriggers tilt down during operation. The lift utilizes a 12-volt DC, electrically operated hydraulic system, with the battery and pump mounted under the lift base in a protective bracket. Fastened to the outer telescoping tube is the platform, constructed of steel tubing with expanded steel flooring and sidewalls that form a protective cage to hold a wheelchair or a standing operator. A horizontal, pivoting seat-arm connected to the cage swings outside of the platform, allowing Medd to transfer to the seat then pivot into the platform cage. A toggle switch to operate the lift is mounted in the platform cage toward the top of the rear corner guard rail post.
